A Beginner’s Guide to Ayurveda and Ayurvedic Oil & Massage Treatments

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional system of health and wellness originating in India. It is often grouped under traditional Indian medicine and has been practiced for thousands of years. Let’s understand the etymology and history. The word ‘Ayurveda’ comes from Sanskrit: Ayus means life, and veda means knowledge; thus, it is often called the knowledge of life. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, it considers your lifestyle, food, sleep, and digestion.

With that information, it would make one curious to understand a little bit more. It is important to understand the basic and most essential fundamentals of holistic wellness, the three Doshas, and traditional Ayurvedic oil therapies commonly offered at wellness centers. We hope this page serves as an introductory guide to these practices and their role in promoting overall well-being, not as a medical reference.

How does Ayurveda work?

At its core, Ayurveda focuses on maintaining balance and promoting overall well-being. According to Ayurvedic principles, every individual has a unique constitution (Prakriti), shaped by the combination of the three Doshas, viz. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Health is seen as harmony between the body, mind, and daily activities. Based on an individual’s constitution, lifestyle, and wellness goals, a practitioner of Ayurveda may recommend personalized approaches involving diet, daily routines, herbal preparations, and therapeutic practices.

The three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha

In Ayurveda, the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, are fundamental biological energies or principles that govern different functions of the body and mind. Each individual has a unique combination of these three Doshas, which is believed to influence their physical characteristics, mental tendencies, and overall well-being.

Vata (pronounced VAH-tah): The Principle of Movement: Associated with the elements of space and air, Vata governs movement and communication within the body. In Ayurveda, it is linked to functions such as breathing, blood circulation, nerve impulses, and muscle and joint movement.

Pitta (pronounced PIT-tah): The Principle of Transformation: Associated with fire and water, Pitta drives transformation and conversion. It is traditionally associated with digestion, metabolism, body temperature, and nutrient processing.

Kapha (pronounced KAH-pah): The Principle of Stability: Associated with earth and water, Kapha provides structure, strength, and stability. It is linked to the body’s physical skeletal system, joint lubrication, tissue support, and maintaining strength and endurance.

In Ayurveda, balance refers to the harmonious existence and functioning of the three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The overall make-up or constitution of these three Doshas, in varying amounts, makes up the unique constitution (Prakriti) of each individual.

Exploring traditional Ayurvedic oil therapies

Ayurvedic oil therapy uses warm, herb-infused oils. These herb-infused oils may be massaged over the whole body, may be poured as a gentle stream of oil, or maybe held in a small constricted area over parts of the body. Treatments differ by body region and technique. Two commonly practiced Ayurvedic therapies, Abhyanga and Shirodhara, are traditionally associated with relaxation, comfort, and overall well-being.

These therapies have to be personalized to an individual’s prakriti, which includes their health history, lifestyle, seasonal changes, skin type, and overall diet and regimen. A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner guides the selection of suitable oils, temperature, and techniques to ensure each therapy aligns with the individual’s needs and comfort. Professional guidance helps create a considered and personalized approach to Ayurvedic wellness.

Traditional therapies for relaxation

Abhyanga

Abhyanga is a warm herbal oil massage performed with long, rhythmic strokes. One small pilot study linked it to lower stress (self-reported). Many people enjoy it as part of a self-care routine.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a steady flow of warm oil over the forehead while you lie comfortably. A small study in healthy volunteers described a calm but alert state. A randomized study in healthy women found lower anxiety scores afterward. Ayurvedic principles say it may calm Vata in the head region.

Understanding Basti therapies: Kati, Griva, Hrid, Nabhi, and Janu

Basti therapies are traditional Ayurvedic treatments in which a warm, medicated oil is retained over a specific body area using a specially prepared dough ring. Each therapy is named according to the body region where it is applied.

  • Kati Basti treatment: Focuses on the lower back. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic wellness practices, it involves retaining warm medicated oil over the lumbar region.
  • Griva Basti treatment: Focuses on the neck region and is traditionally associated with relaxation and comfort around the neck and cervical area.
  • Hrid Basti therapy: Involves retaining warm medicated oil over the chest region and is traditionally associated with relaxation and a sense of well-being.
  • Nabhi Basti treatment: Focuses on the navel region and is traditionally included in Ayurvedic practices aimed at supporting digestive wellness.
  • Janu Basti treatment: Focuses on the knee joint and involves retaining warm medicated oil around the knee as part of traditional joint-care practices.

These therapies are selected according to individual needs and are often included in personalized Ayurvedic wellness routines. A qualified practitioner guides their application and the choice of medicated oil.

Choosing Ayurvedic treatments safely

Choosing an appropriate Ayurvedic therapy means understanding your individual needs, health history, and comfort level. A qualified practitioner can assess your lifestyle and medical background before recommending suitable therapies. The World Health Organization (WHO) also provides benchmarks for the safety, quality, and regulation of traditional medicine practices. Sharing details about any allergies, pregnancy, or current medications helps the practitioner provide appropriate guidance and personalize your wellness experience.

When exploring Ayurvedic wellness, choose quality products and consult a qualified practitioner. In Canada, Health Canada provides guidelines for natural health products, including Ayurvedic formulations, which can be identified by an eight-digit Natural Product Number (NPN).

If you are considering Ayurvedic Treatment in Thunder Bay, a consultation is a good starting point. Discuss your lifestyle, health history, and wellness goals with the practitioner to understand which therapies and approaches may be right for you. Ayurvedic care can also complement your regular healthcare routine as part of a holistic approach to well-being.

I was not a big fan of Homeopathy and was sceptical if Homeopathy will help my wife with her PCOS. She used to have terrible acne and period pain. She started taking medicines from Dr. Faisal in 2014 and within a year she was better and also conceived. We are a healthy family and regularly consult our family Homeopath for all our troubles. Brought my children to see Dr. Faisal back in year 2020 for allergic issues. He is incredibly gentle in his approach, making both my children feel at ease during consultations. His attention to detail is truly commendable—he takes the time to listen carefully and understand the root of any issue before prescribing a treatment. His thoroughness ensures that every aspect of the children’s health is considered. We've noticed significant improvements since starting treatment, and his patience and empathy make every visit a positive experience. A truly dedicated and caring professional!

Dr. Faisal is our family Homeopath and we have know him since 9 years. We consult him for all our complaints whether minor or major. I consulted him first for my skin and respiratory allergies and was better within 2-3 months. After that I consulted him for every little ailment, be it minor cold or cough or tummy pain; and there is no looking back even though he is far from Malaysia. My husband was so impressed that he also started consulting him for his gastric complains and now my 2 year old is also his regular patient. I can't thank Dr. Faisal enough for all his face to face and online services. Thank you so much Dr Faisal and long life for LifeCare Wellness Homeopathy ❤️💪🏻
